“At the Heart of the Community with the Community at its Heart”

Trinity’s History

ChurchBWTrinity was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1890 at the corner of Howard and York Streets as the “Trinity Reformed Church”.

On March 3, 1929 Trinity moved to the current site at 915 North Main Street. In 1934, Trinity was renamed “Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church” after the Evangelical and Reformed denominations merged.

On July 14, 1940 Trinity merged with the Wooster Avenue Reformed Church and met as one congregation at the Trinity Main Street location.

In 1958, the congregation authorized construction of a new Education Wing and the church membership grew to 1300 by 1960, when the new wing was dedicated.

In February of 1958 our Church joined the “United Church of Christ” which resulted from a union of the Congregational Christian Church and the Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1957.

Our building carries the design of a modified English Gothic style with clerestory treatment of the sanctuary, a connecting tower and chapel and an education wing of the collegiate gothic tradition.

The sanctuary nave is patterned in the form of a cross with two trancepts. The gothic arches remind one of folded hands uplifted toward heaven. Hand carved wood symbolism is in abundance at the altar and pulpit.

The stained glass windows at Trinity are unprecedented in their beauty and quality. They are filled with Christian emblems that, when studied, add to appreciation of life under Christ and of the martyrs and others who have gone before us.

The Berghaus organ and grand piano in the sanctuary provide the opportunity to enhance our musical experience while worshipping. Our organ is unique in that it has dual consoles and two ranks of pipes, one at the altar and another in the choir loft at the rear of the sanctuary.

Come visit... Trinty is at the Heart of the Community with the Community at Its Heart. Our services are open to all.
